On Saturday the 13th of February UWBC’s men and women’s recently selected 1st VIII’s travelled down to London to compete for the first time in their selected crews. The Men faced Vesta boat club's 1st VIII (50 Head of the River 2009) and 2nd VIII (115 HORR) whilst the Women went up against HSBC Boat Club.

The men’s crew raced from Chiswick Bridge to the Mile Post against the stream, approximately 3km in distance. Starting a length up on Vesta’s 1st VIII and 2 lengths down the 2nd VIII UWBC powered through Vesta’s 2nd VIII in the first two minutes and pushed away from the 1st VIII. The conditions were relatively mild for the tideway however during the latter part of the race they became much more challenging but the crew managed to sustain their speed and rhythm. The end result of the 11 minute race was a UWBC win by 3 lengths on Vesta’s 1st VIII and 8 lengths on the 2nd VIII.

1st VIII crew: Kobi Annan (Coxwain), Dan Garside, Ben Gittus-Smith, Ivan Indilo, Jamie Palmer, Marius Rutkevicius, Chris Martin, Chris Halls, Will Powell
