Peterborough Head of the Nene Race Report

Saturday, 6th February 2010
Author: Jamie Palmer

On Saturday the 6th of February UWBC entered four boats into Peterborough Head of the Nene; a men's trial top VIII, a senior men's IV, a women's novice VIII and a men's novice VIII. The course is set on the same 5km stretch as BUCS, and as anyone who has competed on it will know it is one of the most uninspiring and bleakest landscapes in Britain. However not put off by the location or the dismal weather conditions all of the athletes were confident and ready to take on some of the top names in rowing.

The results were tremendously impressive with the men's top trial VIII winning IM3 (19 minutes 18 seconds) by a generous margin of 7 seconds beating a lot of strong crews such as Kings Sch Chester (5 mins 56 secs Marlow regatta 2009) and St Pauls Sch (40th Head of the River). The senior men's IV also won their IM3 division on the shorter 2.5 km race in a time of 11 minutes 21 seconds. This left the men's top boats with an unbroken record of wins this academic year. The women's novice VIII also performed excellently coming in third position in their division in a time of 23 minutes and 59 seconds, overtaking two crews in the process. The men's novice VIII racing for their second time performed extremely well despite a major seat malfunction, coming in 7th out of 15 competitors in a time of 21 minutes and 42 seconds.

Although only entering a modest number of boats, and fraction of the current active members, UWBC proved on Saturday that it is well on its way to the biggest and fastest year in club’s history.
